ACTION ON SUICIDE RALLY: Mandate
Facts
- Suicide accounts for the deaths of five hundred Irish people each year.
- Suicide is currently the leading cause of death in youths under 24 years.
- Youth Suicide in Ireland ranks fifth in the enlarged EU Suicide rates.
- Suicide rates for Males aged 25 to 29 years more than doubled in the ten years to 1999.
- The number of young women aged 15-24 years who have died by Suicide has trebled from 1990 to 2004.
- The economic cost of Suicide in Ireland has been estimated at €900m per annum.
We call on the government to:
- Implement the recommendations of the Houses of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Health & Children Seventh Report “The High Level of Suicide in Irish Society” July 2006.
- Implement the recommendations of “Reach Out, The National Strategy for Action on Suicide Prevention”, 2005-2014.
- Implement the recommendations of “A Vision for Change”, the Report of the Expert Group on Mental Health Policy.
- Provide clear and transparent annual reports on progress on implementation of each of the above.
- Allocate a minimum sum of €10m for each of the next five years specifically for identified measures to reduce the instance of Suicide.
- Establish a system for comprehensive, accurate and up to date data on Suicide in Ireland.
